Juno Power Express

The Juno Power Express is an exciting transmission project being proposed by Anbaric Development, a US-based transmission and large-scale storage development company, that would help efficiently bring offshore wind power to New York, helping the state reach its renewable energy goals.

Project Overview

In 2022, Anbaric Development proposed the Juno Power Express to serve as a significant transmission project to efficiently harness offshore wind energy and deliver it to homes and businesses across Long Island, all while aligning with New York’s renewable energy goals.

The Juno project represents a substantial undertaking with the goal of transmitting a significant 1,200 Megawatts (MW) of power to the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) Ruland Road Substation, located along the Route 11 Corridor in Melville, Long Island, operating at a voltage of 138 Kilovolts (kV).

BENEFIT TO LONG ISLAND

What makes Juno Power Express unique is its innovative approach to seabed cabling. Through planning and cutting-edge technology, this project is carefully designed to minimize disturbances to the seabed, setting it apart from other transmission models. This not only underscores Anbaric’s unwavering determination to environmentally responsible practices, but also serves as a commitment to fostering a sustainable environment for marine ecosystems.

By harnessing the potential of offshore wind, Juno holds the promise of benefits for homes and businesses across Long Island. As renewable energy sources, like offshore wind gain prominence, the contributions of the project can translate into lower costs on your energy bills.

PARTNERSHIPS

Anbaric remains dedicated to engaging and uplifting local residents and union members and prioritizing investment in the local community. The development of the Juno project is owed much to the combined efforts of Anbaric and Hallen Construction, a locally renowned company known for its expertise in executing union-led infrastructure projects across Long Island.

LOCATION AND ROUTE

The Anbaric team has completed extensive research to develop a route that minimizes its impact. The designed route is completely underground, ensuring zero visual impact. The power would flow from an offshore wind farm off the coast of Long Island and reach the shore at Jones Beach, where it will then travel 17.9 miles to reach the Ruland Road substation.

Research and planning have gone into shaping the route for the specific purpose of harnessing renewable energy. This includes the placement of utilities, comprehensive construction blueprints, and the identification of locations for Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD). In our commitment to responsible construction, we pledge to ensure that any areas dug will be put back to its original state or even better.

Anbaric possesses an advantageous property for the construction of the converter station component – this 3.2-acre parcel is strategically situated near the Ruland Road substation. This site is located along the Route 11 Corridor in Melville, in an area already designated for commercial, industrial, and residential purposes, adding to its strategic value and establishing it as a key interconnection hub for integrating offshore wind power. Notably, Anbaric is committed to collaborative engagement and is actively seeking input from local communities and elected officials in the design of the converter station, ensuring that the project aligns with the needs and preferences of our stakeholders.

TECHNOLOGY USED

Anbaric has secured interconnection positions to connect to the power grid, for both 800 MW and 1200 MW capacities. These positions have undergone System Reliability Impact Study (SRIS) assessments and been formally entered into the New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) Class Year 2023.

The Juno Power Express is set to utilize High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) technology, which enhances efficiency by allowing greater power flow with fewer cables, further reducing its environmental impact. HVDC systems also create a very weak electric magnetic field, even weaker than the Earth’s natural magnetic field, the same force that guides a compass. The project completed its SRIS study and has formally entered the NYISO 2023 Class Year.

ADDITIONAL PUBLIC INFORMATION

We have taken a significant step forward by submitting an Article VII application, which was evaluated and deemed compliant by the Public Service Commission in March 2023, marking a fundamental achievement in meeting regulatory requirements.
