Wakefield, Massachusetts—Anbaric applauds the New England states’ announcement of applications to the Department of Energy (DOE) for funding needed to build transmission projects that will integrate offshore wind and access hydroelectricity.

States announced the Joint State Innovation Partnership for Offshore Wind was submitted on January 13th to the Grid Innovation Program, seeking up to $250 million from DOE for each independent transmission system to integrate offshore wind with the onshore grid.
Analysis shows that planning and procuring independent transmission will reduce costs and environmental impacts. Brattle Group’s 2021 analysis Offshore Wind Transmission: An Analysis of New England and New York Offshore Wind Integration found that planned transmission would avoid $1.1 billion in upgrades to the New England grid, and would reduce marine cabling by 50%. Additionally, analysis by the United Kingdom grid operator also found that competition across independent owners of offshore transmission reduced costs by 20% to 30%.
