Somerset, Massachusetts—President Joe Biden today visited the site of an Anbaric-developed project to connect offshore wind to the grid at a decommissioned coal plant in Somerset, Massachusetts. The President’s visit to Brayton Point showcases a project conceived by Anbaric in 2019 to connect offshore wind energy to the grid and highlights the need for the strategic development of transmission infrastructure.
“Brayton Point is an ideal site to connect offshore wind to the grid,” said Anbaric CEO Clarke Bruno. “Investing in transmission infrastructure now will accelerate the development of renewable energy and the President’s visit underscores the need to plan transmission that will enable the offshore wind industry to scale quickly and responsibly.”
Achieving President Biden’s goal of deploying 30 gigawatts (GW) of new offshore wind capacity by 2030 will require optimal utilization of sites like Brayton Point to reduce interconnection costs and minimize impacts on fisheries and the environment.
For 50 years, Brayton Point was home to the largest coal-fired power plant in New England and the last in Massachusetts. The plant closed in 2017, and in 2019 Anbaric presented a vision to create a Renewable Energy Center on the site. For three years, Anbaric led the advancement of interconnection, routing, and permitting to deliver 1,200 megawatts (MW) of offshore wind to Brayton Point before selling the project to Mayflower Wind in 2021.
“Brayton Point’s robust grid infrastructure and waterfront location make it an ideal interconnection location for offshore wind,” said Bruno. “Scaling offshore wind will require dozens of projects like Brayton Point to create of a shared ocean grid and realize the potential of our world-class offshore wind resources. Anbaric is developing innovative transmission projects to scale the offshore wind and we look forward to seeing these projects advance to speed our transition to a low carbon economy while creating thousands of jobs across the country.”
